A Few Tips and Tricks From Our Family to Yours

Shop ahead, we are a week out and NO it is not to late to hit the stores, if you are not able to go early then my mother-in-love and I usually shop late at night.

Clean out your fridge ahead of time.  However, if you still don’t have room for all those leftovers, if the temperature is right outside you can open the door to the garage and place them in the garage.

Cut through the clutter and make copies of recipes or print them out from the Web.
Tape them to cabinets at eye level. (This will save precious counter space, too.)
You can also use a magnet and stick them to the hood above the range.
Slip the recipe sheets into plastic sleeves and file them in a binder so they’ll be ready next year. (http://www.realsimple.com/holidays-entertaining/holidays/thanksgiving/thanksgiving-cooking-problems-solved/menu-problem)

Get conversation started with family members you only see once or twice a year by playing one of my family’s all time favorite games.  “Highs and Lows”.  One person starts the game with their high of the year, month, week, or day.  The same person then shares a low.  This game is a great conversation starter and a way to give thanks; even in the lows of life there are still highs to find and give thanks for.

I also included an easy link to my Pinterest Board on the right side bar for more Thanksgiving ideas, tips, free printables, and crafts for one of my favorite times of year.

As you prepare for this busy time of year, I pray you remember to quiet your heart and give thanks for the greatest gift of all, Jesus Christ.  He is our only Hope.  He is the strength our weary hearts desperately need during this exhausting time of year.

Give thanks to the LORD, for he is good.
His love endures forever.
Psalm 136:1

While others are celebrating, there are still some mourning and finding a new normal and way of doing life without friends and family.  Many are broken and alone.  Let us not forget we can be the Hope for so many this time of year.  Sharing a smile, prayer, kind word, or warm hug.  I challenge you to look for someone who needs Hope, and share your story of How His Hope change your life.

  1. I actually plan to ask guests to help in the cooking. Depending on cooking ability levels it could be an "open the can and dump it in" request or pointing at a pile of veggies and a cookbook with a request that they come up with something fun. Given that holiday visits can span multiple days, it really helps break things up.

    1. Susan what a great idea, I finally convinced my mother-in-love to let me help her with certain dishes and it helped lighten the load. I am not sure what took her so long to let me help ha ha she is the one who taught me to make most of the dishes she makes at Thanksgiving ha ha lol. I love to cook so I love to help in that way.

  2. I love that picture of the women praying. I also think the idea of leftovers in the garage is brilliant (weather permitting). Also, thank you for being so considerate to remember those for whom Thursday will be especially difficult. If you find a moment to perhaps lift up the Keith family in your prayers that would be so kind. Last year they found their 18 month old daughter had passed away in her sleep (for no known cause). It happened on THANKSGIVING day. This year will be especially difficult for them. :(

    1. Thank you they are sweet friends of mine. I love being able to use the garage as a refrigerator and even a freezer. You are welcome, I know this one will be difficult for our family as well my grandmother who raised me passed just last month. I cannot imagine the heart ache they are experiencing. Yes, I will especially pray for comfort and strength. My heart aches for them.

  3. My parents like to smoke their turkey. We have a few families come over to celebrate and our tradition is eating. We used to play games, but now all the kids (I used to be one of them) are grown up and most have moved far away. It is still fun to get together, just different.

    1. I agree, I love just having time to fellowship, talk, eat, and make memories. I still joke and ask when I will get to graduate to the adult table, ha ha seems like I am still with the kids, only because mine are not yet old enough to really feed themselves.

  4. Excellent post. I love your ideas for taping recipes to cabinets and using magnets. And most of all...yes, as children of God who walk in the Light, we carry HOPE. May we each share the Hope of God with all we meet over the next week! Romans 15:13 Bless you, Laura, with GREATEST JOY on your amazing adventure journey with Jesus!

  5. We just try to keep it simple. We just enjoy going around the table and sharing what we are most thankful for and enjoy eating and spending time together as a family. Thanks for the reminder of those who don't have family or those who don't find this season joyful. I love your heart to think of so many less fortunate this time of year!

Blessings to you and Happy Thanksgiving!
